Group Prayers and Meditation

Chanted prayers together with silent meditations take place daily at the Centre – please see calendar for times.

Each month we hold a variety of Buddhist prayers that are open to everyone except for Dakini Yoga and Quick Path which are for those with Highest Yoga Empowerments only.

We make these prayers and requests to different deities or Buddhas in order to create the conditions for successful meditation, improve our good qualities and to benefit everyone around us.

Every day we perform Heart Jewel or Wishfulfilling Jewel – these are the main practices of Kadampa Buddhism. They usually include 15 minutes for silent Lamrim meditation.

These practices include prayers to the Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden, through which we can overcome obstacles to our practice and create favourable conditions so that our realisations of dharma will increase. Friday’s prayers include a Tsog food offering.

Offering to the Spiritual Guide takes place twice a month, on the 10th and 25th. These poetic chanted verses illuminate the entire Buddhist path to enlightenment and include a Tsog food offering and a special practice of relying upon the Spiritual Guide.

Liberation from Sorrow – prayers to Mother Tara are held on the 8th of every month.  Tara is a female Buddha who rescues us swiftly from problems and dangers. If we rely upon Tara with strong faith she will protect us from all dangers and fulfill all our wishes.

Powa Ceremony – transference of consciousness for the deceased is done on the last Sunday of each month on behalf of those who have recently died. Our practice of Powa offers those who have recently died the opportunity to attain permanent liberation by taking rebirth in a Buddha’s pure land.

Medicine Buddha Prayers – by relying upon Medicine Buddha, living beings can be cured of heavy disease and find release from the inner poisons of the delusions.  Moreover, by practising these prayers we receive a special power of body, speech and mind which we can then use to help others through healing actions.
